Unscrupulous editor Walter Burns convinces Hildy Johnson - his ex-wife and his star reporter - to take on one last assignment before retiring from the newspaper business to settle down with a mild-mannered insurance salesman. Hildy is tasked with interviewing a man placed on death row for murder and finds herself increasingly drawn into uncovering the truth whilst Walter tries everything he can to keep her on the job and in his life.
